The record does not name the river, but the scene, a wide sweep of water through dense jungle with a barge moving along it, fits the early twentieth century, when panoramic views of tropical waterways were popular with travelers and government reports alike. The picture is grouped with Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, which ran from 1901 to 1909 and included the start of American work on the Panama Canal, a project that depended on moving men, machinery and supplies through tropical waterways. Roosevelt was also a keen traveler and writer about wild country, so the image sits comfortably within his era's fascination with the tropics.
