This photograph records a mural titled "Rest," painted by Charles Sprague Pearce for the Library of Congress. Pearce was an American painter who spent much of his career in France, and he was one of several artists commissioned to decorate the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, which opened in 1897 and was meant to showcase American art and learning. Murals of this kind were part of a wider effort to make public buildings feel dignified and culturally ambitious. The caption card that accompanies the image gives no date, so the exact year the photograph was taken remains uncertain.
