The picture shows murals painted by Charles Sprague Pearce, an American artist who spent much of his career in France, for the Library of Congress. The caption card labels it a "recreation," so it may document a later reconstruction or copy rather than the original decoration, and the card gives no date. The murals belong to the decorative program of the Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897 and was meant to show the library as a home for learning. Pearce's work there reflects the period's taste for allegorical figures and classical themes in public buildings.
