The mural titled *Mural Civilization* is one of the painted works by George W. Maynard, a Washington-area artist who took part in the decoration of the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building. That building opened in 1897 and was meant to showcase American art and learning, so its murals were designed to celebrate human progress and the arts. Commissions of this kind drew on the Beaux-Arts tradition, which favored allegorical figures and large-scale compositions. This photograph preserves the appearance of the painted surface as it was seen by visitors in the building's early decades, and it is useful for studying how these interior programs were arranged.
