Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1881 was a waterfront city on the Hudson, directly across the river from Manhattan, and its economy rested on the piers, ferries, and rail yards that handled freight and passengers bound for New York. Railroad lines ran to the shore, and steamboats and ferries carried commuters and goods across the river daily. Much of the population was German and Irish, and breweries, shipyards, and small manufactories employed many residents along the flats near the water. Castle Point, on the northern heights, held the Stevens Institute of Technology, which had opened only a decade earlier and gave the city a reputation for engineering education. Residents of the period knew Hoboken as a gateway to New York as much as a place in its own right.
