Asbury Park, on the Monmouth County coast of New Jersey, was about a decade old in 1881. Methodist promoters had laid it out as a seaside resort named for Bishop Francis Asbury, and its early appeal rested on a dry, orderly summer community close to the ocean. Rail service from New York and Philadelphia brought steady streams of visitors who filled its hotels, boarding houses, and cottages, and the town's economy depended on that summer trade. The map records a place still growing from its first plots, with its street grid, churches, and lodgings laid out along the shore as the resort tried to establish its name.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Asbury Park 2, New Jersey, drawn in 1881. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
