In 1904 Hoboken still earned most of its living from the Hudson waterfront, where the piers of the Hamburg-American Line received ocean liners and their passengers bound for Europe. The company's Hoboken terminal was one of the largest such operations on the Atlantic coast, and stevedores, dockworkers, and ship handlers filled the blocks behind the piers. The city's large German community, many with family ties to Hamburg, shaped its churches, clubs, and neighborhood life, and it supplied much of the labor for the warehouses and small factories along the flats. Residents knew Hoboken as the last American stop for thousands of travelers and emigrants each year, and as the place where the ships they could see from their windows set out for the open Atlantic.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Hoboken, New Jersey, drawn in 1904. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
