This glass negative is captioned as Bobby Jones, the Atlanta golfer whose amateur career made him one of the most celebrated figures in American sport. In 1930 he won the United States and British Open and Amateur titles in a single season, a feat known as the Grand Slam, and he later helped found the Augusta National Golf Club. The Bain News Service, the New York agency that produced many such negatives, relied on caption cards that were not always checked, so the identification rests on that original label. The record gives no date, but the glass plate itself preserves the sharp detail of early newspaper photography.
