Gene Sarazen, the golfer, appears here in a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work assembled by the Bain News Service, a press photo agency that supplied newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century. Sarazen rose to fame in the 1920s and 1930s, winning the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship and the Masters, and he is best remembered for the shot that won him the 1935 Masters. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Still, the glass plate format points to the period when Bain's staff covered sports for the news wire.
