*A Fair Puritan* takes its title from the young woman it portrays, a figure meant to evoke the early New England settlers. G. H. Buek & Co. of New York issued this color chromolithograph around 1897, and the design is credited to E. Percy Moran, an American painter known for sentimental scenes of colonial life. Prints like this were popular in the late 1800s, when Americans were romanticizing their Puritan origins and Thanksgiving was becoming a nationally observed holiday. The picture shows how the period imagined its founding families.
