Godey's Lady's Book was among the most widely read women's magazines in nineteenth-century America, and its June 1867 cover shows the kind of genteel fashion plate that made it famous. The issue reached subscribers in the years after the Civil War, when many households were turning to illustrated periodicals for news of dress, home life and manners. Editor Sarah Josepha Hale, who did much to promote Thanksgiving as a national holiday, had shaped the magazine's tone for decades. Though the cover is a summer picture rather than a harvest scene, it offers a useful look at the domestic ideals that Hale's readers were encouraged to hold.
