Few pictures in this set show a machine caught mid-task, and this one shows an automatic wringer and spreader on a drying machine running in Baltimore, Maryland. The photograph was made by Holmes I. Mettee in 1939, a period when American factories were adding mechanized handling to older hand processes. Its subject tags point to the tobacco and cigarette industries, which relied on large drying and conditioning equipment to prepare leaf before manufacture. Worth noticing is how the machine's rollers and spreading mechanism show the mechanical logic of the plant floor at a time when such equipment was becoming standard.
