Women grinding barrels of automatic .45 pistols at the Colt's Patent Fire Arms plant in Hartford, Connecticut, are the focus of this U.S. Army Signal Corps photograph, made sometime between 1914 and 1918. Colt was a major maker of the Model 1911 automatic pistol, and as the war drew men into military service, factories like this one turned to women to fill production jobs. The picture records that shift in the workforce along with the precise metalwork that finishing a firearm's barrel required. Signal Corps images from these years were often used to document war industries on the home front.
