Stereo cards rarely took photographic processing equipment as their subject, which sets this one apart: it puts a developing machine, not a landscape or a famous building, at the center of the view. The card was issued by the H.C. White Co., a North Bennington, Vermont firm that produced stereographs for home viewers from the 1890s into the 1920s, and the Library dates it to about 1909. Cards like this show how commercial photo processing was being mechanized in the early twentieth century, when many photographers moved away from hand-worked tanks and trays toward factory-made equipment.
