Few entertainments of the period were staged on the scale of Imre Kiralfy's naval spectacle at Madison Square Garden. Kiralfy, a Hungarian-born impresario who built his reputation on enormous theatrical pageants, filled the arena with a large cast, painted scenery, and mechanical effects meant to recreate life at sea and naval battle. The Garden's great hall, designed by Stanford White and opened in 1890, let him stage productions that a conventional theater could not hold. Such shows were part of a wider late-19th-century fascination with the navy, which had grown more visible in the public eye as the United States built up its modern fleet.
