Few entertainers of the late nineteenth century staged events on the scale of Imre Kiralfy, a Hungarian-born impresario who turned enormous theatrical pageants into popular entertainment on both sides of the Atlantic. Here he brings that showmanship to the original Madison Square Garden, the large arena on Madison Square in New York, where crowds could watch a naval display that combined ships, crews and dramatic staging. Such spectacles reflected a public fascination with the modern navy, which was growing in prestige and public attention as the United States expanded its fleet. The image is worth studying for how it blends military subject matter with the crowd-pleasing theater of the period.
