Two cherubs take center stage here, one offering a rose while the other holds a heart, a pairing that gave Victorian and Edwardian senders a ready vocabulary of affection. Cherubs, the winged infants borrowed from Renaissance painting, became a staple of greeting cards in the late 1800s, when printers could reproduce color lithography cheaply and mail-order sentiment was booming. Valentines of this kind were often exchanged anonymously or with a verse tucked inside, so the image itself carried much of the message. Look closely at the roses and the heart, since those symbols did most of the talking.
