Taken on Danes Island in Svalbard, the image is tied to Salomon August Andrée's 1897 attempt to reach the North Pole by hydrogen balloon. The expedition launched from the island that summer and vanished into the Arctic ice, and its three members were not found until 1930 on White Island. The caption card credits Alexis Machuron, but that attribution is unverified, so the photographer's role should be treated with caution. The French title suggests the picture was labeled for a French-speaking audience at the time.
