Few 1917 advertisements tie a phonograph company to the war as openly as this color lithograph, which invites buyers to hear a new set of Victor records of popular patriotic songs. The "His Master's Voice" trademark sits at lower left, a reminder of the Victor Talking Machine Company's best-known symbol. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and manufacturers often pitched their products to home-front patriotism, a strategy this poster shows with its soldier subjects. Patriotic tunes were sung at home, at rallies, and at gatherings, so a recording offered families a way to share in the national mood.
