Two men in caps stand beside a large iron flywheel, a detail that sets this picture apart from the lighthouse exteriors and lamp rooms usually shown on this board. Machinery like this often ran the mechanisms that kept a light station working, such as the clockwork that turned a rotating lens or the steam or gas engines that powered fog signals. Keepers and assistant engineers had to maintain these engines by hand, so a photograph of them beside the machinery shows the working side of station life. The caps and the open setting suggest a workshop or engine room rather than a formal portrait.
