Visitors stroll across a rolling sand dune in the foreground while a tall, banded lighthouse stands behind them, the sort of coastal navigation tower that guided ships past shifting shoals. Lighthouse stations of this kind were usually built with keepers' cottages and outbuildings nearby, and the dunes around them were often a popular place for day-trippers to walk and picnic. The contrast of the open sand, the striped tower, and the people gives a sense of how these working stations became places of leisure as well as navigation.
