The poster recruits 25,000 student nurses for the U.S. Student Nurse Reserve, a wartime program that drew young women into nursing training so hospitals and military services would have staff. Printed in color in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it was issued under the Women's Committee of the Council of National Defense and carries the name of the artist, Milton Bancroft. Its appeal rests on the idea that women's training and service were part of the national war effort, a message that was common in wartime posters but aimed here at a specific group of students.
