A fairy with the drooping yellow flower clusters of laburnum, the golden chain tree, is drawn on a card left blank for a written message. Flower-fairy illustrations like this were popular in Britain and America from the late 1800s, when greeting cards and gift books made small winged figures a familiar sentimental motif. Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies books, first published in 1923, later set a style that many such images followed. The open space is worth noticing, since it shows the picture was meant to be written in and sent, not hung as a finished painting.
