A August 5, 1930, game in Plano, Illinois, gives this photograph its subject, and its title sets the women's contest against the major leagues: "The big league has nothing on this game." Women's baseball drew sizable crowds in the 1920s and 1930s, when touring and town teams played exhibitions that mixed real competition with showmanship. The print comes from the Wittemann Collection at the Library of Congress, and its wry caption suggests the players and promoters wanted spectators to see the local game as a worthy rival to professional ball.
