The title names pitcher Bob Shawkey of the New York Yankees, and this 1921 glass negative from the Bain News Service captures him during a season when the club was rising toward its first American League pennant. That year the Yankees played their home games at the Polo Grounds, which they shared with the Giants. Bain's agency produced large numbers of negatives for newspapers and magazines, so pictures like this one offer a close look at working ballplayers of the early 1920s. The name comes from the agency's own notes and has not been independently verified.
