Under the bold command "Man the guns," this 1942 recruiting poster asks young Americans to join the Navy at a moment when the country had just entered the Second World War. Its artist, McClelland Barclay, was a commercial illustrator who served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and brought the polished, magazine-style color work he was known for to wartime recruitment. The Navy expanded rapidly during the war, and posters like this one were displayed in post offices, train stations and storefronts to draw volunteers to its ranks.
