Few photographs record the swearing-in of Abraham Lincoln on March 4, 1861, which took place on the east front of the U.S. Capitol, where the new president delivered his first inaugural address. The print is a salted paper print from the album of Benjamin Brown French, a Washington official who kept photographs of the city's public life. The Capitol was still under construction, with its cast-iron dome not yet complete, so the scaffolding and unfinished building give the view a sense of a nation in the middle of building itself. Within weeks, the Civil War had begun, and the moment captured here became a point of reference for the years that followed.
