Ulysses S. Grant is shown taking the oath of office on March 4, 1873, the start of his second term, with Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase administering it. The record identifies the scene as Washington, D.C., and the print is a wood engraving of the kind that filled illustrated weekly newspapers in the 1870s, when engravers turned photographs and sketches into blocks that could be printed alongside the news. Chase, who had also been a Lincoln-era Treasury secretary, died only weeks after this ceremony, which gives the moment added weight for viewers today.
