Fifteen officers gather on the deck of the Union ironclad Monitor in a picture taken during the Civil War and printed at a later date. The ship's low profile and rotating gun turret, designed by John Ericsson, made it a novelty, and it gained lasting fame in March 1862 when it fought the Confederate ironclad Virginia at Hampton Roads, the first battle between ironclad warships. The crowded deck hints at the cramped working conditions of a vessel that sat low in the water and was built around its turret. The Monitor sank in a storm off Cape Hatteras at the end of 1862 while under tow.
