Few ships are as closely tied to American memory as the Mayflower, and this print shows her under full sail, bound for the New England coast. She carried about 100 passengers across the Atlantic in 1620, many of them English separatists seeking religious freedom, and anchored off Cape Cod that November before the colonists settled at Plymouth. The ship sailed back to England the following spring, a reminder that she was a working merchant vessel and not only a symbol. The harvest feast of 1621, which later became the basis for the national Thanksgiving holiday, was held ashore. The record dates this reproduction to about 1928, though that date is uncertain.
