This engraving shows the Mayflower under sail, published as the frontispiece of the first volume of *Pioneers in the Settlements of America*. The ship carried the Pilgrims from England in 1620, and the voyage ended with the landing at Plymouth later that year. No contemporary drawing of the Mayflower is known to survive, so images like this one reflect the illustrator's imagination as much as the ship itself. Its popularity in books of the 19th century helped shape the Pilgrim story that Americans later linked to the Thanksgiving holiday.
