Unlike many pictures on this board, this one is a glass negative whose record names its subject only as "Olympic swimmers," with no date, place, or photographer attached. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negatives or cards, so it reflects how the agency described the image rather than a confirmed identification. Bain's New York agency supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early decades of the twentieth century, and swimming was a regular feature of Olympic coverage from the first modern Games in 1896. Because the record is thin, the picture is best read as a sample of how wire-service photographers recorded athletes at the Games during that period.
