Merrimac, Massachusetts, in 1889 was a small manufacturing town on the Merrimack River in Essex County, where water power and rail service supported its work. Hat making and shoe production gave many households their wages, and the Boston and Maine line carried goods and commuters between the village and the larger mill towns and cities downriver and to the south. The town had only recently become independent of Amesbury, so its civic life was still taking shape, with churches, schools, and lodges serving as the main places people gathered. Residents of that decade would have known Merrimac first for its factories and its river, and this view records the streets, mill buildings, and houses that made up that working community.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Merrimac, Massachusetts, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
