Mittineague, a village in the western part of Ludlow in Hampden County, Massachusetts, was a small mill community in 1889, set along the Chicopee River in the Connecticut Valley near Springfield and Westfield. Its economy rested on manufacturing, and paper making was a major local industry in the valley during these decades, with mill workers' households clustered near the water and the rail lines that carried raw materials and finished goods out. Like many villages of its size, Mittineague depended on churches, schools, and small stores for its social life, and residents would have measured their town against the larger cities a short distance away. L. R. Burleigh's 1889 lithograph records each street, mill, and house from above, giving a detailed view of a place whose buildings and daily routines were rarely documented in such close detail.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Mittineague, Massachusetts, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
