In 1889 Middleborough, in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, was a mill and farming town. Its economy rested on the water power of the Nemasket River, on cranberry bogs spread across the low ground near the village, and on the Old Colony Railroad, which carried goods and passengers through town. Shops and factories drew workers from the surrounding farms, while families whose roots went back to the town's settlement in the 1600s filled the churches and schoolhouses along its main streets. Residents knew the town for its cranberries. This view of the village shows the depot, mill yards, and steeples that defined daily life there.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Middleborough, Massachusetts, drawn in 1889. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
