Rocky Knob is a site plan drawing rather than a view of the mountain itself, which makes it an unusual entry on a board otherwise filled with overlooks and scenic photographs. Plans like this were prepared as the Blue Ridge Parkway was laid out and built through Virginia and North Carolina, showing how roads, parking, and structures would fit into the terrain. Parkway planners in the 1930s worked to shape the route so that drivers would see the landscape while the road itself stayed low and unobtrusive. Drawings such as this one record those decisions in plain line work and are worth studying for how the designers imagined the land before it was built.
