Few details survive in the record for this view of the National Theater in Barbourville, the seat of Knox County in southeastern Kentucky, which was photographed sometime between 1900 and 1940. The name suggests an ambition to present the house as a modern, national-scale entertainment venue, a common pitch for theaters that rose in small towns in the early twentieth century. Such houses often hosted vaudeville, traveling shows and, from the 1910s on, motion pictures, making the front of the building a focal point of town nightlife.
