Powell's Theater stood in Chincoteague, a fishing town on Virginia's Eastern Shore, where one picture house could serve an entire community. The photograph dates from somewhere between 1910 and 1940, a period when movie theaters spread quickly into small American towns, often replacing vaudeville halls and opera houses as the main place for evening entertainment. Chincoteague is better known today for the wild ponies on nearby Assateague Island, but a theater like this one reflects the everyday leisure life of year-round residents. Small-town theaters of this era typically relied on marquees and painted signs to draw passersby, which makes their street fronts a useful record of how they advertised.
