A mustached gentleman in a high collar looks out from this cigar label, which was designed to catch the eye of a buyer scanning a crowded tobacconist's shelf. The "Vest Pocket" name points to a small cigar made to fit a waistcoat pocket, a format popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when cigars were sold in bulk boxes and tobacco makers competed through eye-catching printed labels. Such labels were often chromolithographed, with fine detail and bright inks, and they were usually pasted onto the box or the cigar itself. Today they survive as small, collectible records of commercial art and of how manufacturers pictured their customers.
