Few vessels in the Currier & Ives catalog have a story as dramatic as the Jeannette. Built as the British naval gunboat Pandora, she was bought in 1878 by newspaper publisher James Gordon Bennett Jr., who renamed her for his sister and sent her toward the Arctic under Lieutenant George W. De Long. In 1881 the ship was crushed by ice in the East Siberian Sea and sank, and her crew faced a grueling overland retreat. The print, dated around that year, captures the vessel at the height of public interest in the expedition.
