A rider who seems to be trembling from an electric shock gives this 1895 color woodcut its comic edge. Its title, *Buruburu taishō*, roughly means "the shivering general." The print belongs to the series *Nihon banzai hyakusen hyakushō* (*Long live Japan: one hundred victories, one hundred laughs*), a group of humorous prints from the Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895. The record tags the scene with cavalry and horseback riding in Manchuria, placing the joke in the war's northern theater. Prints like this turned a distant conflict into lighthearted entertainment for audiences at home.
