The label's wording, "Fresh Strawberries," marks it as a shipping label for a perishable crop, the kind pasted onto crates or baskets so buyers could recognize a grower's or shipper's product at a market or station. Fruit labels like this were usually printed in color by lithography, which made them inexpensive to mass-produce and eye-catching among rival brands. Strawberries spoil quickly, so their packaging had to sell the fruit at a glance. The label also shows how commercial produce was branded and marketed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
