Sunrise is the name printed across this crate label, a bright graphic that once told buyers where a box of New Jersey cranberries came from. Crate labels like this were pasted onto wooden shipping crates so that a grower's brand could stand out on a grocery shelf or a produce dock. New Jersey's Pine Barrens and coastal bogs have produced cranberries since the 1800s, and cooperatives and shippers used bold colors and simple illustrations to make their fruit recognizable from across a crowded market. Look closely at the lettering and the typeface, which show how commercial design worked in the early twentieth century.
