Few American cities were as new as Gary, Indiana, when this group portrait of its police force was made around 1908. The United States Steel Corporation had laid out the town only a few years earlier and named it for company chairman Elbert H. Gary, and it was still taking shape as a steel town on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The photograph was registered for copyright by the Grose Photo Co., and its formal arrangement of uniformed men shows how quickly a young industrial town was building the institutions of civic life.
