An angel holding a set of bells gives this Christmas greeting card its particular character, with the bells recalling the church ringing that marks the holiday. Commercial Christmas cards began in England in 1843, when Henry Cole commissioned the first one, and by the late 1800s printers in Europe and the United States were producing them in quantity. Angels, bells and holly became favorite motifs because they evoked the nativity and the joyful sound of Christmas morning. Cards like this were often tucked into letters or propped on mantels, showing how the custom of sending greetings spread widely.
