Ah, a Fourth of July postcard showing a drummer and a soldier, a pairing that speaks to the military roots of the holiday. Postcards like this were popular in the early twentieth century, when color lithography made cheap, bright greetings easy to mail across the country. Images of fifes, drums and uniformed men drew on the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and they reminded recipients of the sacrifices behind Independence Day. Look closely at the printed colors and border decoration, which show the mass-production techniques of the period.
