A float carrying suffragists at a fair in Yonkers, just north of New York City, makes this August 1913 scene distinct from the city street parades that filled the papers that year. Campaigners used such floats, banners, and processions to draw crowds into conversation about giving women the vote, often in places where a speech might not have reached many people. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds the work of a news photographer who documented the suffrage campaign in the years before New York women gained the vote in 1917. Its caption-style title preserves the event's ordinary, festive setting.
