Pigeons released from a balloon basket, as the French title *Pigeons lancés hors la nacelle* describes, point to one of ballooning's least expected uses. The best-known example comes from the Siege of Paris in 1870 and 1871, when balloons carried mail out of the encircled city and trained pigeons went along to fly dispatches back in. Messages were reduced photographically and tied to the birds, which returned to their lofts in the city. Ballooning in France was still a young and risky enterprise then, so an image like this shows both its military value and its experimental side.
