Few places in the British Caribbean were shaped by sugar as strongly as Barbados, and this glass negative from the Bain News Service shows a sugar mill in the island's capital and main port, Bridgetown. Sugar dominated Barbadian land and labor from the seventeenth century into the modern era, first through enslaved workers until emancipation in 1834 and then through wage and indentured labor. The Bain News Service, a New York agency active in the early 1900s, supplied news photographs to newspapers, but this record gives no date, and its location label is unverified.
