In this photograph, young women stand on duty as pickets during a February 1910 strike among ladies' tailors in New York City. Their presence on the line reflects how central women workers were to the garment trades' labor actions that winter, when thousands of needleworkers walked out over pay, hours, and shop conditions. The picture was made by Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events, and it is preserved in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress.
